The missing middle between a prompt and a result

Why useful AI workflows need context, boundaries, and a clear definition of done.

The missing middle between a prompt and a result — original conceptual artwork

A prompt expresses an intention. A useful result needs a little more structure. Somewhere between the two, someone has to decide which information matters, which steps belong in the process, and how to recognize a finished job.

Start with the outcome

Before choosing a model or adding another tool, write down what the person actually needs. A weekly briefing is more useful when it names the decisions made, the questions still open, and the people responsible for the next steps. That is a stronger target than ‘summarize my updates.’

Make the definition concrete enough to review. Name the audience, the format, the source material, and what should be left out. A clear boundary saves time at every later stage.

Make the middle visible

Break the work into meaningful stages: gather the approved sources, identify the important changes, prepare a draft, and ask for review. Each stage should have an understandable input and an observable result. This makes it easier to diagnose a weak answer without rebuilding the entire process.

Leave room for judgment

A workflow should make uncertainty visible. If a source is missing or two updates disagree, the useful response is to surface the question. A polished paragraph that quietly skips the uncertainty gives a person less control, even when it reads well.

Start with one recurring task and inspect the result together. Improve the steps that create confusion. Keep the parts that reliably help. The goal is a process people can understand, review, and reuse.
